When is genetic testing needed?

Genetic testing is not routine for everyone. It is indicated when the result would change diagnosis, management or future planning.

The purpose of genetic testing is to answer a specific clinical question. Before any test is ordered, we discuss what it can and cannot tell you, and what the possible results would mean.

Typical indications

  • An abnormality seen on fetal ultrasound
  • A high-risk result on first-trimester or NIPT screening
  • Two or more pregnancy losses
  • A previous baby with a genetic or structural condition
  • A known genetic condition in the family
  • Consanguineous marriage
  • Advanced maternal age
  • Repeated IVF implantation failure
