Genetic Counselling

Who should consider genetic counselling?

Genetic counselling is a conversation, not a test. It clarifies what is known, what can be tested, what results would mean, and what choices follow — before any decision is made.

Indications

If any of these apply, a genetics review is worthwhile.

You do not need a diagnosis to seek counselling. Many families come with nothing more than a question.

Previous miscarriage
Particularly two or more consecutive losses, or a loss after a heartbeat was seen.
Previous baby with abnormalities
Structural, developmental or confirmed genetic conditions in an earlier pregnancy.
Family history of genetic disorders
In either partner's family, even in distant relatives.
Advanced maternal age
Age-related chromosomal risk and the testing options appropriate to it.
Positive prenatal screening
A high-risk first-trimester screen or NIPT result needing confirmation.
Abnormal fetal ultrasound
Any structural finding that may have a genetic basis.
Consanguineous marriage
Increased chance both partners carry the same recessive gene change.
Repeated IVF failure
Good embryos that repeatedly fail to implant warrant a genetics review.
Couples planning pregnancy
Preconception counselling, when all reproductive options remain available.
Previous chromosomal abnormality
In a pregnancy, a child, or a parent carrying a balanced rearrangement.
