Can IVF reduce genetic risk?

For couples with a known genetic risk, IVF with preimplantation genetic testing can substantially reduce the chance of an affected pregnancy.

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) analyses a few cells from an embryo before transfer. Only unaffected embryos are selected, which avoids facing a diagnosis later in pregnancy.

Types of PGT

  • PGT-M — for a specific single-gene condition known in the family
  • PGT-SR — for a parental structural chromosome rearrangement
  • PGT-A — screening embryos for chromosome number

Important caveats

PGT reduces risk but does not eliminate it. Prenatal diagnosis is still recommended in the resulting pregnancy for confirmation. The right approach is decided jointly with your fertility specialist after genetic counselling.
