When is amniocentesis performed?
Amniocentesis is usually performed after 15 weeks and samples amniotic fluid containing fetal cells.
A fine needle is passed through the abdomen into the amniotic sac under continuous ultrasound guidance, and a small volume of fluid is withdrawn. The fetal cells in that fluid are used for chromosomal and molecular testing.
Indications
- Abnormal findings on the anomaly scan
- High-risk screening or NIPT result
- Known familial genetic condition
- Suspected fetal infection
- Confirmation of an inconclusive CVS result
What to expect
The procedure takes a few minutes. Most women describe mild pressure rather than pain. Rest is advised for the remainder of the day, and preliminary results are often available within a few days.
