When is CVS recommended?

Chorionic villus sampling is an early prenatal diagnostic test, usually performed between 11 and 14 weeks.

CVS samples a small quantity of placental tissue under continuous ultrasound guidance. Because placental cells share the same genetic makeup as the fetus, the sample can be used for karyotype, microarray or gene-specific testing.

Its main advantage is timing: results are available in the first trimester, which allows earlier answers and earlier decisions.

It is usually offered when

  • First-trimester screening or NIPT shows high risk
  • An abnormality is visible on the 11–14 week scan
  • A specific single-gene condition runs in the family
  • A previous pregnancy was affected by a genetic condition

Safety

In experienced hands, using real-time image guidance and careful needle planning, the procedure-related loss rate is low. Every procedure is planned around placental position, uterine anatomy and maternal comfort.
