When should genetic counselling be done?

Ideally before pregnancy — but it is valuable at any stage, including after a diagnosis.

Genetic counselling is a structured conversation, not a test. It clarifies what is known, what can be tested, what the results would mean, and what choices follow.

Before pregnancy, every option remains open. During pregnancy, counselling guides which test is appropriate and how quickly it must be done. After a diagnosis, it supports decision-making and future planning.

The best time is

  • Before conception, particularly for consanguineous couples
  • Before starting IVF
  • As soon as an abnormal scan or screening result appears
  • After two or more pregnancy losses
  • Before planning a pregnancy following an affected child

This page is general information and is not a substitute for a consultation. Every pregnancy is assessed individually.
